Honest Flodesk Review: Why It's My Favorite Email Marketing Platform (and Who Should Skip It)

*Disclaimer: I only share about companies I truly believe in, and some of the links in this blog are affiliate links, which means I may earn a commission if you make a purchase through them.

Flodesk is my favorite email marketing platform for most service-based businesses because it's intuitive, easy to use, and includes the features most small businesses need. If you're looking for a Flodesk review from someone who uses the platform for both my business and my clients, I’m your gal.

I've used Flodesk for real client work, from setting up accounts and building automations to writing and scheduling email campaigns. My review is based on hands-on experience, not a free trial or a few hours of testing.

I've worked inside Mailchimp, HubSpot, Kit, and several other email service providers over the years, but Flodesk is the platform I recommend most often. It's simple enough that you won't feel overwhelmed, but it can also grow with your business. You can easily build automations, grow your email list, and create professional-looking emails without a steep learning curve.

That doesn't mean it's the right fit for everyone, though. If you run a large ecommerce business or need advanced automations, customer segmentation, and reporting, Flodesk probably isn't your best option.

In this Flodesk review, I cover:

  • Flodesk's features

  • Who I recommend it for

  • When it might not be the right fit

  • Pricing and free plans

  • Customer service

Why Do I Recommend Flodesk?

I recommend Flodesk because it has everything most service-based businesses need without making email marketing feel complicated.

I've worked with several email service providers over the years, and Flodesk is the platform I enjoy using the most. When you're sending newsletters, building automations, creating landing pages, and managing subscribers regularly, the user experience matters.

Here's why Flodesk stands out to me:

  • It's easy to learn. The interface is clean, intuitive, and doesn't require hours of tutorials before you can start using it.

  • It includes the features most service providers need. You can build automations, create forms and landing pages, grow your email list, and design beautiful emails without feeling overwhelmed.

  • It helps you move faster. I can usually get clients up and running quickly, even if they've never used an email marketing platform before.

If your business depends on highly customized automations or detailed analytics, those limitations may influence your decision.

For the service providers I typically work with, though, those trade-offs are worth it. I'd rather recommend a platform that's easy to use and encourages you to send emails consistently than one packed with features you'll rarely use.

What Features Does Flodesk Have?

The main features Flodesk has include a drag-and-drop email builder, email templates, forms, landing pages, automations, digital product checkout, and reporting. I've used these features in my own business and with clients—and for the majority of service-based businesses—they cover everything you need.

Drag-and-Drop Email Builder

The drag-and-drop email builder is one of the biggest reasons I recommend Flodesk. It's intuitive, easy to learn, and doesn't require any design experience.

Instead of fighting with formatting or trying to line everything up perfectly, you can build professional-looking emails in just a few minutes. I spend far less time designing emails in Flodesk than I have with other platforms.

Email Templates

Flodesk comes with a library of professionally designed email templates that you can customize to fit your brand. You can change the fonts, colors, images, and layout. I love that I don’t have to start from scratch.

If I could change one thing, I'd love to see Flodesk expand its template library. The templates they have are beautiful, but I'd like more variety to choose from.

Flodesk templates aren’t quite as customizable as some other email marketing platforms, but I actually see that as a tradeoff. By limiting some of the customization options, Flodesk keeps the editor simple, intuitive, and much easier to use.

Forms and Landing Pages

Flodesk lets you create signup forms and landing pages using professionally designed templates that are easy to customize. I like that I can build something that looks polished in a few minutes.

That said, I do wish you could do more customization with the forms. For the forms, you can only choose from Flodesk's existing templates (which don’t let you add or remove certain fields). For most businesses, that won't be a deal breaker, but if having highly customized opt-in forms is important to you, it's worth knowing before you sign up.

Automations

Flodesk's automations are one of my favorite features. I've used a lot of email marketing platforms, and I think Flodesk has the easiest, most intuitive automation builder. The visual workflow makes it incredibly simple to see how everything connects. There's much less of a learning curve here than you'll find with most other platforms.

For the service-based businesses I work with, Flodesk can handle just about every automation you need. Simple welcome, nurture, abandoned cart, re-engagement, and post-purchase sequences are all easy to set up.

That said, this is also one of Flodesk's biggest limitations.

If you run a product-based business or need highly detailed automations based on customer behavior, purchases, or other conditions, you'll probably outgrow the platform. Flodesk doesn't offer the same level of flexibility as some of its competitors, so it's important to think about what kinds of automations you’ll need.

Digital Product Checkout

If you sell digital products like templates, guides, or courses, Flodesk lets you sell them directly through the platform. It's a nice option if you want to keep everything in one place instead of connecting another ecommerce platform.

Reporting

Flodesk tracks metrics including open rates, delivery rates, click rates, subscriber growth, and unsubscribes. I use these reports to see what's working and make informed decisions about future emails.

The reporting isn't as detailed as some other platforms, but for the service-based businesses I work with, it's usually more than enough to know how we’re doing.

Who Do I Recommend Flodesk For?

I recommend Flodesk for service-based businesses, solopreneurs, and small business owners who want an email marketing platform that's easy to learn. If you've been putting off email marketing because other platforms feel too complicated, Flodesk is a great place to start.

I think Flodesk is an especially good fit for:

  • Service providers

  • Coaches

  • Consultants

  • Freelancers

  • Solopreneurs

  • Small business owners

  • Course creators

  • Businesses that are new to email marketing

If your priority is sending consistent, professional-looking emails instead of mastering a complex marketing platform, I think you'll be really happy with Flodesk.

When Might Flodesk Not Be the Right Fit?

Flodesk might not be the right fit if your business relies on advanced ecommerce marketing, complex automations, detailed customer segmentation, or in-depth reporting.

  • Large ecommerce businesses. If you sell physical products, you'll probably need more than Flodesk offers.

  • Businesses that rely on advanced customer segmentation & purchase-based automations. Flodesk makes it easy to organize your subscribers, but if you need to create granular audience segments based on customer behavior, you'll probably need a platform with more advanced automations.

  • Businesses that depend on detailed reporting. Flodesk gives you the basic reporting. If you regularly dig into your email data to optimize campaigns and customer journeys, you'll probably want more detailed reporting than Flodesk offers.

That said, these aren't deal breakers for the businesses I typically work with. Most service-based businesses don't need enterprise-level ecommerce features or complicated reports. You need an email marketing platform that's easy to use, helps you stay consistent, and supports steady business growth.

That's why I continue to recommend Flodesk to most of my clients.

How much does Flodesk cost?

Flodesk's cost depends on how many subscribers you have. You can choose a monthly or annual plan, and your price increases as your email list grows.

One change I'm disappointed to see is that Flodesk no longer offers flat-rate pricing. It used to be one of the platform's biggest advantages because you knew exactly what you'd pay each month, regardless of how quickly your list grew.

Now that pricing is based on subscriber count, your monthly cost increases as your audience grows. Even with that change, I still think Flodesk offers good value for most service providers. You're getting email marketing, forms, landing pages, automations, checkout, and reporting in one platform, so you may be able to replace other tools you're currently paying for.

Is Flodesk free?

Flodesk offers a free plan that lets you explore the platform before committing to a paid subscription.

The free plan is a great way to:

  • Get familiar with the platform

  • Design emails using Flodesk's templates

  • Test the user experience

  • Decide whether it's the right fit for your business

If you're ready to start building automations, growing your list, and using Flodesk as your primary email marketing platform, you'll eventually want to upgrade to a paid plan.

Note: Flodesk occasionally updates its plans and pricing, so I recommend checking its pricing page for the most current information.

Is Flodesk worth the cost?

I think Flodesk is well worth the investment if you're a service provider. You get an email marketing platform that's easy to learn, enjoyable to use, and capable of supporting your business as it grows. If your business needs highly specialized ecommerce functionality or advanced marketing automation, you may find better value elsewhere.

What Is Flodesk Customer Service Like?

Flodesk's customer service has been excellent every time I've needed help. I've only had to contact support a handful of times, but they've consistently responded within 24 hours with thoughtful, knowledgeable answers that solved my problem.

One thing I really appreciate is that you can record a Loom video to show exactly what you're experiencing instead of trying to explain it in a long email. That makes it much easier for the support team to understand the issue, and I've found their responses to be detailed and genuinely helpful.

Flodesk doesn't offer phone support, so everything is handled through email. Personally, that hasn't been an issue for me because their response times have been so quick. I'd rather get a helpful answer within a day than spend time waiting on hold or getting transferred between departments.

(Anytime I can avoid calling a “help line” I’ll take it haha.)

Overall, I think Flodesk has some of the best customer support I've experienced from an email marketing platform.

Bonus: It's a Woman-Owned Company

Flodesk was co-founded by Rebecca Shostak and Martha Bitar, and it's still a woman-owned company. As someone who works with female founders as my target audience, it's something I genuinely appreciate. For me, it's an added bonus on top of a platform I already enjoy using!
